his award-winning project,
constructed at the summit of Albany’s
Mount Clarence, is the collaborative
creation by Robinson Build-Tech,
AECOM and H&H Architects.
The client, City of Albany, required a high-
quality design, which would commemorate
and honour Albany’s ANZAC heritage, whilst also
attracting tourism to this astonishing
natural landmark. Due to the unique location
and pristine natural environment in the Mount
Clarence area, the proposed walkway and viewing
platform needed to be sympathetic and protective
of the natural surroundings, but also to enable
A combination of concrete footpaths and granite
steps wind around the boulders toward the lookout,
which incorporates steel decking and natural rock
surface. The stainless steel balustrades and handrails
that surround the walkway were all fabricated on
site to mould around the natural formations of the
land, producing a seamless finish.
An exceptionally high level of quality control
was exercised throughout this project. The project
manager worked very closely with the client, also
managing both on-site and off-site production.
The final product is a walkway that curves in
harmony with the surrounding rocks, and that
leads to a commemorative tourist plaque and
viewing platform that appears to float above
the ground, giving spectacular views of King
George Sound below.
The interpretive signage acts as a directive
landmark, marking key points of reflection and
highlighting the significance of the area within
Australia’s ANZAC history.
Padre White Lookout
This challenging, incredible project pushes engineering and construction
boundaries, while honouring Albany’s ANZAC heritage.
