ine Elms, one of London’s forgotten
‘twilight’ zones, is in the midst
of a spectacular transformation into
a landmark riverside district.
In May 2011, Woods Bagot’s London office was
appointed by international developer Ballymore
to design the interiors for the nearly 2000 luxury
studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments of
Embassy Gardens in the Nine Elms district.
With an aesthetic reminiscent of classic 1950s
American design, the apartments impart a sense
of solidity and class, with elegant materials, such
as marble and oak parquet flooring, and intimate
details like walnut veneers, and ceramic door and
drawer handles. High ceilings, open floor plans,
and floor-to-ceiling windows create a generous
sense of proportion.
Balconies, which are imagined as winter gardens
or sun traps, feature a mix of painted metal and
glass, with brushed steel handrails and eco decking.
While keeping with the 1950s feel, kitchens
feature more modern touches, including natural
marble worktops and splashbacks, concealed
LED lighting, stainless steel appliances and built-
in wine coolers. Individually tailored additions,
such as custom-designed modular cabinets and
vintage double lever polished tap fittings, add an
elevated level of sophistication. Bathrooms also
feature vintage tapware, as well as freestanding
bathtubs, marble vanity tops and ceramic basins.
A neutral eggshell palette ties the interior
together to create an inviting atmosphere within
a period style.
Inspired by classic 1950s American design, the luxury apartments of Embassy
Gardens are a highlight of London’s rejuvenated Nine Elms district.
