FIRM Construction was chosen for the design and construct
of the flashbutt welder as part of Rio Tinto’s rail expansion program.
esponsible for the integration of the
plant, equipment (such as cranes) and
the rail system, FIRM Construction’s
main priority was to meet Rio Tinto’s
time frame and ensure the safety of all the
employees working on the 750m-long project.
Rio Tinto’s computerised flashbutt welding
facility produces the longest rail strings in
Australia, at 400m.
The automated unloading of stock lengths
is stacked and fed into the welding plant.
Once welded and processed into longer lengths,
these are then loaded onto specialised rail
carriages for distribution throughout the
Rio Tinto Iron Ore rail network.
Construction works carried out by FIRM
include civil works, concrete footings,
amenities, control and operational facilities
and the installation of specialised welding
plant and cranes.
The company worked closely with the suppliers
and RioTinto to integrate the specialised plant into
the construction works.
FIRM Construction would like to acknowledge
Railtech for the shatter welding system, Bellingham
for the cranes, and Calibre as the EPCM engineer,
for their work on this project.
