An engineered timber framing system was
developed as the primary structural element.
Extremely simple in form, the geometry creates
a rudimentary order to define the framing system,
the walls and ceiling elements. Clad in birch
Purebond Eco plywood, the timber structure
features coloured acoustic tiles in the higher
ceiling coffers to provide the ideal sound
condition to attenuate the space.
The design of puzzle pieces as cabinetry serves
as a metaphor expressed in form. Not only are they
used as storage consoles and a play zone, they also
function as room dividers to separate the various
teaching spaces. The expressionist cabinetry
forms, along with the bright bursts of colour bring
the space to life, and conclusively proves that the
word ‘eco’ can also mean fun.
The R6.0-rated wall and roof insulation
systems, combined with double glazed window
elements, provide a thermally temperate internal
environment to minimise heat gain in summer and
retain warmth in winter. Cross-flow ventilation
was also maximised via automated awnings.
Thermally-rated ceiling skylights positioned amid
the coloured ceiling panels flood the teaching
spaces from overhead with soft, natural light.
Brooking Design would like to thank the
following companies for their collaborative efforts:

Veneers, Dulux, Crosby Tiles, Laminex, Sontext,

Powell also contributed immensely to developing
the unique building solution.
