Fitzgerald Street Housing Development | JCY Architects and Urban Designers MULTI-RESIDENTIAL
The site is unified by a sunny northern
courtyard, running the length of the property,
which has created a sense of community and
security for the tenants without compromising
individual privacy. The courtyard incorporates
features of nature, generating a sense of space
and openness within the property.
The site is embellished with colourful splashes
of citrus and vibrant reds set against the green
hues of artificial turf and light-coloured
aggregate concrete paving.
The building itself is defined by crisp, clean,
neutral tonalities in grey, and strong horizontal
lines with painted geometric patterns.
With affordability being such a key element
of this project, every design aspect offers both a
decorative and functional use. Exemplifying this
are the creative privacy screens, which provide
individual space and strategic solar protection,
and are a key feature of the building’s decorative
capacity. The screens are made of perforated,
anodised aluminium – a signature of the
structure – fused with similar design elements
found on Fitzgerald Street.
The building was designed in accordance to
the brief’s request for ‘green building’ techniques,
he Fitzgerald Street Housing Development
was built upon the ethos of well-executed,
high-quality designs without infringing
on the affordability of the building.
The aim to incorporate the best of urban living
within the social housing budget was no small
feat, but was accomplished with superb results
and under budget. The project offers tailored
dwellings that vary between single bed, family
and aged-care accommodation.
