Combining innovation with artistic
architecture, GHD’s Al Bidda Tower
is raising the standard of creative
infrastructure on a global scale.
tanding as an icon of the landscape,
GHD’s Al Bidda Tower in Qatar
exemplifies innovation at its best.
The brief’s core requirement
was to create a memorable tower, distinct
from conventional designs. Taking inspiration
from the shape and anatomy of a tornado,
the 215m-high structure features progressively
rotating floors that create the dynamic “twist”
to the structure and provide a graceful sense
The unconventional glass curtain that
clads the building forms a crystalline facade
that imbues an artistic aesthetic unsurpassed
in the region. The multi-faceted diagonal
curtain wall is built from double glazed units
specially coated with reflective low-E glass
with thermally broken framing.
The design was developed through energy
modelling to reduce solar gain and is complemented
by flexible framing, which reduces the corrosive
effect of the region’s wind-driven sand.
Housing a wide selection of amenities,
including restaurants, showrooms, a health club
and an art gallery, as well as business space and
a multi-storey car park, the tower has become
renowned both as a commercial hub and a feat
of architectural accomplishment.
The combination of the building’s unmatched
form, magnified by the mosaic reflections of
the tessellated glass, combine to create a tower
that is both pronounced in its own right yet in
harmony with the surrounding environment.
