THE CITY IN
Perth was recently rated ninth out of the world’s
top 10 liveable cities. That said, we also place
undue stress on our landscape, natural resources
and infrastructure, and the costs of low-density
living are currently evident in our urban sprawl
and traffic congestion. While our environment
enhances our lifestyle – West Australians are the
most active of any Australian state – in 2010 the
Australian Conservation Foundation ranked Perth
the least sustainable city in Australia.
By comparison, in just 40 years Singapore has
become one of the world’s most considered cities
off the back of similar issues, balancing population,
development and strain on natural resources.
In the 1960s, Singapore experienced expansion
far beyond its economic, infrastructure and
social means. A rapidly growing city centre and
a population boom led to a shortage of suitable
housing and infrastructure, as well as high
unemployment rates. Since then, Singapore’s
population has already more than doubled in size,
at around five million people.
