esigned by Tony Blackwell (Director)
and Craig Carpenter (Associate) of
Blackwell & Associates, the Claremont
Central Precinct Shared Space Project
incorporates the latest theories in place-making to
achieve a much-needed city centre revitalisation.
Building on the concept of creating a high-
quality shared pedestrian and vehicle space,
Blackwell & Associates saw the opportunity to
encompass a much larger scope and create a truly
vibrant, united and unique precinct that gives a
distinct image and feel to the Claremont CBD, with
Bayview Terrace as stage one.
Key to the success of the project, the design
needed to maintain on-street car parking numbers,
provide safe emergency vehicle access, be
pedestrian-orientated, safe and accessible, increase
vibrancy and attract visitors. Blackwell & Associates
designed “up to a standard”, not down to a cost.
To meet the brief, 45-degree on-street parking
was proposed, with high quality granite paving.
The design also proposed triple the number of
street trees to provide more shade and improve
amenity. Constraints of the existing road corridor
width, preventing ‘rat-runs’ and meeting parking
bay quotas, resulted in one-way traffic flow.
Blackwell & Associates would like to
acknowledge Bruce Aulabaugh (traffic and
transport consultant) and Mike Edwards (EdArt
illustrator) for their advice and assistance.
This pedestrian-orientated public realm accommodates the
conflicting needs of pedestrians, retail outlets and vehicles to
create a vibrant and flexible domain
