irports are an essential piece of
infrastructure that not only act
as gateways to major cities, but also
form part of the commercial precinct
and urban fabric of our metropolis.
As the concept of the airport-city seeps into the
urban landscape of Australia, master planning of
airport property must not only satisfy aeronautical
needs but also address the commercial criteria for
airport owners and managers.
Woods Bagot has spent the last three decades
designing airport facilities across the globe. In
collaboration with Perth Airport, the global
design firm is set to push the boundaries of what
this airport needs for the future.
The first stage of the project includes the
expansion and upgrade of the International
arrivals experience including the incoming duty
free retail, relocation of the immigration primary
line, expansion of the baggage reclaim hall and
reconfiguration of the quarantine and customs
secondary search area.
The second and most significant stage of the
project is that, for the first time, a substantial
domestic flights capacity is being added to the
international terminal. This will significantly reduce
the pressure on the current domestic terminal,
which has been created by the rapid growth in
passenger traffic in Perth over the last few years.
Additional international capacity also forms
part of the project’s second stage and comprises
two gates capable of handling the five-hundred seat
double-deck Airbus A380 currently operated
by Qantas, Emirates and Singapore Airlines.
The design of this project aims to capitalise
on the best aspects of the existing terminal
and to take full advantage of the particular
characteristics of the site.
