The main structure is based
on a steel diagrid system.
eaturing a three-level volume exhibition
space and interactive learning
environments, Curtin University
Engineering Pavilion is an accredited
5-Star Green Star Education Building, and an
educational tool in itself.
The site is strategic in its linking of the
surrounding buildings and its making use of an
underutilised space with an existing concrete
footbridge traversing it.
The new pavilion has been built around
the footbridge, making it seemingly penetrate
the glazed structure and becoming the landing
to the lift and stairs that wind through the volume.
A steel diagrid is the main structural system,
framing the exhibition space and defining
the external portico to the west. It allows the
internal volume to be simplified and freed of
structural clutter, reduces the requirement for
sheer walls, and provides an overall reduction
in structural steel.
A building management system monitors
energy usage, offset against power from solar
panels, and rainwater harvesting assists with
the servicing of urinals.
Taylor Robinson Architects would like to

Doric Group, the Curtin University Planning &
Project Management team, and federal government
funding (Education Investment Fund).
