high-quality commercial, health
and institutional projects, Hames
Sharley recognises the importance
of providing associated community infrastructure
close to these places of work or study. The high
demand for quality childcare is one aspect of this.
The University of Western Australia identified
the need to improve childcare options for staff
with young children, and in particular for women
seeking to return to the workforce following the
birth of a new child. With a projected growth
in student numbers, and postgraduate student
numbers in particular, there was a clear need for
increased childcare provision on campus.
Hames Sharley has responded with an
intelligent and sensitive design for the new
100-place Early Learning Centre. The building
supports high-quality care in a stimulating learning
environment that is enriching for children and staff.
A great deal of thought has gone into
environmentally sustainable design in the building.
Constructed on what was previously a car park,
and carefully built around four existing jacaranda
trees, the centre incorporates sensible features
such as north-facing shaded glazing, operable
windows for cross ventilation, and solar pergolas
to north-facing elevations.
In addition, environmentally sustainable design
features of the building have been turned into an
