n order to provide substantially increased
services to the Augusta Margaret River
Shire into the future, Bollig Design Group
created a building that was functional,
contemporary and responsive to the region.
Environmentally sustainable development
principles were central to the design concept,
including the use of recycled materials such as
timber that was milled from trees felled by the
roadside, and passive solar design techniques.
High levels of insulation, including thermal
performance double glazing, was introduced,
along with automated windows for maximum
access to temperate fresh air, low-energy
lighting connected to sensors, low water use,
a rain garden and landscaping.
The interior design and space planning was
developed simultaneously with the architecture to
reflect the operational requirements of the shire,
while being cost- and environmentally effective
through an integrated fitout approach.
Extensive use of local timber as cladding and
lining products grew out of sourcing materials
from roadside widening projects, and milling and
recycling them into the project.
Bondor insulated roofing products were
used to achieve thermal ratings and create a
space that is visually open without traditional
low-height office ceilings.
Local granite stone was sourced for the
feature walls internally and externally, tying
the landscape into the base building.
Polished concrete floors are low maintenance
and tie the colours and finish from outside to inside
with matching external washed in-situ concrete.
Key to the success of this project were products
such as Cimeco cabinets, Bondor roofing, Viridian
glass, Interface carpets, Burgtec furniture,
Wildwood Stone, Blue Chip aluminium, Hunter
Douglas aluminium louvres, and lighting by
iGuzzini, INLITE, Fagerhult, WE-EF and Concord.
Bollig Design Group worked with structural
engineer BPA Australia, electrical/mechanical
engineer VDM Group, hydraulic engineer Volume
Design Group, plus landscape architect Bill
James and Cimeco construction to create this
architectural outcome, which has set a civic
standard for the Augusta Margaret River region.
The interior spaces are visually open,
avoiding standard low-ceilinged options.
