The Swan River is set to get a makeover on the city side
After many ideas and revisions, it seems the city side of the Swan
River will finally get the development it needs to be recognised as a
leading waterfront location. Led by the Department of Planning, on behalf
of the Western Australian Planning Commission, a Ministerial Taskforce
has been established to provide guidance for the project, comprising high
executive management from across State Government and the City of
Perth. Further assistance for the project is being provided by the East Perth
Redevelopment Authority, with $21.5 million allocated over four years in
the 2010/11 State Budget for detailed design, technical investigations and
statutory approval processes. Expected to take 10 to 15 years to complete,
after an intended commencement date in 2012, the project will encompass an
area mass similar to the current CBD (9.9ha), with a main focus area between
William and Barrack streets. Some key features of the plan include: a water
inlet with a promenade edge that will draw the Swan River in towards the
CBD; an internationally recognised Indigenous cultural centre that will
showcase the State’s important Aboriginal heritage; an open-space island,
which will provide open performance spaces; and a mix of retail, cafe,
commercial, residential, tourism and civic areas. The project is expected to
provide an extra 150,000sqm of office space, 1700 new city apartments, 220
hotel and short-term accommodation options and 36,000sqm of retail space,
plus attract up to nine million visitors annually.
