BERRY SPORTS HALL
Beating candidates like the Wimbledon Centre Court
Redevelopment and the Atlantic Health Jets Training
Facility, Australia's own Berry Sports Hall, took out the
sports category at the 2009 World Architecture Festival.
Sydney architect firm Allen Jack + Cottier
nabbed the award with their project, which was
inspired by the endless Australian sky. The site
was originally an experimental dairy farm and
to honour these origins, the new sports hall is
reminiscent of a modern farm shed.
Two long sides of precast concrete panels make
up the building, with each panel pierced by 500
shards of glass in amoeba-like windows allowing
natural light to flood the hall in the day. At night, the
interior lights shine outwards, illuminating the building and
making it "disappear" into the night sky.
This building is also an eco winner, featuring
environmentally sustainable design -- a dozen wind
turbines combine with a panel of louvres to create
natural ventilation that cools in summer and creates
an insulation blanket in winter.
Water that collects on the roof is tracked back
from the 3.5m cantilevered composite roof via
a steel beam, providing water for the irrigation tanks.
