Facebook has proved one of the biggest
technological phenomenons of the noughties --
connecting old friends, promoting events and causes,
and generally providing a brilliant communication
tool that is free for all.
It's no wonder, then, that the headquarters needed
to facilitate interaction and connection between
The structure at Palo Alto's Stanford Research
Park has brought together more than 700
employees, once dispersed across 10 locations
around Palo Alto. The company wanted to maintain
individuality for each of the divisions as they came
together under the one roof.
Studio O+A designed the o ces in a patchwork
fashion, inspired by Facebook users and employees,
bringing together seemingly disparate elements to
form a cohesive pattern.
Studio O+A used colour and interior spacing to
create neighbourhoods within an open plan space.
The company's executives sit in central areas,
accessible to all employees, while large lounges and
open space allow the sta members to congregate.
A kitchen and cafe area provides gourmet meals
to sta at all hours, while micro kitchens are placed
throughout the building for drinks and snacks.
The design goal was to maintain the history and
raw aesthetics of the building (originally a laboratory
facility) while creating a dynamic and fun work
environment for the youthful sta .
Many walls and spaces are left unfinished, with the
sta encouraged to write or add artwork to the walls
and move furniture as needed, allowing the o ce to
