HAVAIANAS (São Paulo, Brazil)
Havaianas sandals (or thongs as they're known to us)
were created in Brazil in 1962, inspired by traditional
Japanese slippers or "zori", made of rice straw.
For years, Havaianas existed as just rubber thongs,
far from the fashion icon they are today.
Isay Weinfeld was enlisted to design a Havaianas
store at one of the world's most expensive addresses --
Rua Oscar Freire in São Paulo. The brief was to reflect
the brand by portraying freshness, casualness, comfort,
ease and wellbeing, while being essentially Brazilian.
The resulting space opens fully onto the street,
almost giving the air of a sidewalk extension. There are
no windows or window displays, allowing natural light
to pour in, while lush greenery adds life to the store.
The building develops in descending levels -- at
street level, there is a small lounge area and a
mezzanine overlooking the whole store.
The store is located one level below and
occupies ample space with double height ceilings.
It features market stands reminiscent of the

displays for children's products.
At the back of the store, on a half-raised level,
is a small garden for the exclusive use of the sta .
